The top companies in the world know that recruiting the best talent to fill their open tech jobs requires a lot more than the promise of working on a cool, innovative project (though that certainly helps).
If you’re in the market for a new job and have the most in-demand skills, you’ll find most companies likely to offer you any combination of these three perks:
- A great company culture. Relaxed work environment, team activities, a contagious mission, and incredible growth potential. Look at companies like Netflix and LinkedIn for great examples of top-notch culture.
- Amazing benefits. Discretionary time off, health benefits for the entire family, and a laundry-list of perks to show how much they value your talent. Airbnb and Google take the cake here.
- Unbeatable compensation. Salary, bonuses, equity, stock options, and sign-on perks all play a part in determining the best-paying tech jobs. Great opportunities exist across any number of different companies, but according to Paysa data, VMWare and Facebook offer some pretty competitive compensation packages.

Companies spend a lot of time (and money) investing in culture and benefits, both of which hold a ton of value. But for a lot of top tech talent, compensation is the most important metric when considering new tech jobs.
Which is why today’s post walks you through 6 tech jobs where you can earn over $200,000 per year.
If you have the skills to land one of these top spots, financial woes aren’t likely to be a part of your future. Let’s dive in.
Engineering Manager, San Francisco
The Bay Area has long been the hotbed for all things tech. Though there are plenty of opportunities available outside of the Bay Area, if you are working in engineering, there’s a solid chance you’ll find yourself exploring opportunities in San Francisco.
And while the cost of living is unquestionably the highest in the U.S., engineering talent in the Bay Area benefit from some of the best-paying tech jobs on the market.
It’s not likely you’ll walk off the street into an engineering manager job, but a recent post on the Paysa blog walks software engineers through the process of getting promoted — definitely worth a read if you’re interested in transitioning to leadership.
In addition to developing leadership skills and having a bigger influence on the direction of your product, engineering managers benefit from some incredible salaries in the Bay Area.
According to Paysa data, the average engineering manager salary in San Francisco is $234,000 per year.
So, if you’ve built up a solid background in engineering and see yourself transitioning into a leadership role, take a look at some of these open engineering manager jobs in San Francisco.
If leadership isn’t right for you and you’d prefer to stay in an individual contributor role, check out one of these opportunities in San Francisco.
Chief Data Scientist, New York
Landing a chief data scientist position in the Big Apple means you’ll be making the kind of money to enjoy life in “the city that never sleeps.”
Chief data scientists are responsible for extracting trends and meaning from the abundance of unstructured data most large tech companies have at their disposal. The role requires a diverse skill set, which is why companies like Viacom and S&P Global are willing to pay the big bucks to get the right person on board.
According to Paysa, these are the top skills required among chief data scientists in New York.
As you can see, chief data scientists need a solid mix of coding experience and big data comprehension to really flourish in their jobs. Not an easy combination to come by, but if you’re talented enough to qualify, the compensation plans for these tech jobs are unbeatable.
According to Paysa data, chief data scientists in New York earn an average of $251,000 per year.
If you have what it takes, here are some open positions to consider.
Director of Technology Solutions, Los Angeles
Beautiful beaches, endless entertainment, and top-notch tech jobs. What more could you ask for from the City of Angels?
Companies like Snap Inc., SpaceX and Headspace are based in the area of L.A. dubbed “Silicon Beach,” and all offer great opportunities to make great money while enjoying the perfect year-round climate.
While some individual contributor tech jobs pay over $200,000, you’ll find leadership offers the most opportunity to earn a big-time salary — for example, a director of technology solutions. According to Paysa data, Angelenos with that title can expect to pull in $205,000 per year.
What does a director of technology solutions do?
Of course, you don’t make over $200K without some significant responsibility. A director of technology solutions creates the roadmap for future technology implementations internally (i.e. the platforms – CRM, marketing software, etc. – used by employees) as well as client solutions.
Here are the skills companies in LA are looking for from their directors of technology solutions:

Senior Applied Researcher, San Jose
San Francisco might be the liveliest city in the Bay Area, but if you’re looking for a shorter commute to Silicon Valley in an up-and-coming community, look no further than San Jose.
As mentioned before, the Bay Area commands some of the biggest salaries across all positions, but here’s one that doesn’t require leadership experience: a senior applied researcher.
Like a data scientist, a senior applied researcher works directly with company data. Instead of interpreting that data for trends as a data scientist would, applied researchers take current research and methodologies and apply them to the data in an attempt to solve persistent problems.
It’s a role that requires analytical thinking and problem-solving skills from the best-of-the-best. As a result, the salaries can be pretty significant.
According to Paysa data, senior applied researchers in San Jose can expect to see salaries averaging $260,000 per year.
Director of Product Management, Seattle
In a recent post here on the Paysa blog, data showed that Seattle — not San Francisco or New York — was the highest paying city for tech talent in the United States.
Maybe that’s because Microsoft is based there or because the cost of living for an average renter hovers around $3,000 per month, but either way, if you can handle the rain, Seattle is the place to be.
Directors of product management can expect to make a salary over $200,000 in the Seattle market.
According to Paysa, Seattleites in this position pull in an average of nearly $300,000 per year.
Can you say, “Hello, loft overlooking Pike’s Place!”?
If you want to qualify for one of these open jobs, here are the skills required:
Principal Engineer, Seattle
Here’s another great position in Seattle for engineering talent. Earlier, we mentioned that Silicon Valley remained the largest tech hub for engineering talent. That said, a recent post on the Paysa blog highlighted how relocating from the Bay Area to Seattle would impact your salary.
In all the positions we compared, salaries were higher in Seattle than San Francisco.
If you have the experience to get hired as a principal engineer, there may be no better market for you than Seattle. Principal engineers earn an average of $268,000 there, all while enjoying a cost of living 21% lower than that of San Francisco.
Still not convinced? Well, try this on for size. Microsoft — who along with Amazon and Starbucks dominate the tech market in Seattle — has an average market salary of over $400,000 per year for principal engineers.
Pretty incredible, right?
Needless to say, only the best talent qualify for roles of that magnitude, but that’s still a great indication of how much your talent is worth in Seattle.
Making a salary over $200,000 is the dream for most tech talent, but many people don’t even realize how close they should be to making that kind of money.
Though Seattle and San Francisco offer very competitive salaries, they both still ranked as top cities where employees may be underpaid.
