Before you can enjoy all that Facebook has to offer, you need to make it through your first day. Your first 45 minutes, to be exact. Facebook subscribes to the 45-minute onboarding rule, where the goal is to have a new employee ready to be productive on day one in less than an hour. This extreme efficiency is necessary in a company that is scaling up so quickly. At one point, Facebook was hiring anywhere from 50 to 250 people every week.
How do they do everything in 45 minutes? It takes a lot of planning. All electronic devices for the new employee are calibrated before he or she arrives, so there’s no time wasted waiting on programs to install or working out bugs. Then, it’s just about making sure the employee knows where to go and how to get things done.
Facebook engineers begin Bootcamp, where they get access to the entirety of Facebook’s code base. In this six-week program, engineers find out what projects they’re passionate about and figure out where they fit in at the company. Unlike most tech businesses, Facebook doesn’t hire engineers for specific teams. Instead, they hire talented engineers who can then choose which team they work on.
Bootcamp allows new employees to work on many different bugs and systems across the company. These are real projects that have a direct impact on Facebook’s 1.23 billion daily active users. Each Bootcamp participant is assigned a mentor, a senior engineer who assigns tasks and checks their code before it goes live on the website.
As we mentioned before, this program is another way the company maintains ties to its hacker, startup roots. Bootcamp lets employees start things for themselves, allows employees to expand their horizons, and builds camaraderie among new team members.
Instead of standardized training modules and lectures, engineers start right out of the gate, affecting change within the company. It also allows them the freedom to change projects and move to different teams later. Since all engineers go through the same training, everyone is given the same Facebook building blocks, so no time is wasted on the basics if someone wants to switch teams.
