We all know that the days of walking into a business and asking for a job are behind us.
But many job seekers are finding that even the more “modern” approach to finding a new career—applying to jobs online, posting your resume to job boards, etc.—isn’t yielding the same results it did even a few years ago.
As we’ve highlighted in previous posts here on the Paysa blog, the competition for top positions can be quite steep. According to Forbes, the average job gets 118 applicants with only around 20 percent moving forward to an interview.
And with so many different tools available to help guide potential job seekers on their career path, it can be difficult even to know where to start when you’re hunting for your next big opportunity. So, the Paysa team put together these three tips to help you find the best possible opportunity to match your skills, experience, and career goals:
#1. Reach out to a recruiter.
Most people only connect with recruiters when it’s the recruiter contacting them first. But proactively contacting recruiters to let them know you’re searching for something new can be the best way to open doors to opportunities you didn’t even know were out there.
Think of your relationship with a recruiter like that of an actor and a talent agent: sure, you could go out there and try to land auditions all on your own, but having an advocate in your corner that knows where to find the right opportunities for you can make a world of difference. Recruiters can help get your foot in the door while also acting as a trusted advisor throughout an interview process. And best of all, a relationship with a great recruiter can span several years (and job changes) in your career. So start out your job search by putting an “all-call” out the recruiters you know. But don’t stop there…
#2. Leverage your network.
Recruiters are a great starting point, but the savviest job seekers know that their entire network of personal and professional contacts can hold the key to their next career opportunity. Getting the word out to your network should be personal and low-pressure for the people you contact. Sending a handwritten note, inviting them for a cup of coffee, or meeting up for a lunch discussion are all great ways to share more about your goals and career aspirations with the people who might be able to help you make things happen.
#3. Check out Paysa’s Job Sense.
Earlier this year, we made a complete overhaul of our job search platform by doing away with traditional, keyword-based searching in favor of a new job matching solution. Job Sense offers a revolutionary new way for you to find the right opportunity based on your experience and career aspirations. Simply upload your resume to Paysa, and our proprietary algorithms will extract specific job attributes and skills that align with top positions from companies looking for candidates like you.
