In the exciting, ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the role of the machine learning scientist is key.
That’s because machine learning scientists are the ones behind the algorithms driving the latest in AI technology. As top tech companies like Uber and Facebook continue their work creating a more seamless, intuitive experience for their customers, the demand for machine learning scientists will continue to grow. And as a result, machine learning scientist salaries are now some of the highest in all of tech. According to Paysa, the national average machine learning scientist salary is $107,000 per year.
But if you know where to look, you can actually earn more than double that at some top tech companies.
That’s why the Paysa team put together this article: to help current machine learning scientists (and those aspiring to a career in the field) know which companies are paying a premium for talent with a specialty in AI.
#1. Uber – $236,000 per year
Topping out the list of tech companies on the hunt for best-in-class AI talent is the leader of the ride-hailing service industry, Uber. And it completely makes sense why: Uber is making a huge push to be on the forefront of self-driving technology, and with huge competition from the likes of Apple, Google, and various startups, Uber needs great talent to elevate their product above the rest. That’s why Uber salaries for machine learning scientists average out to $236,000 per year. That includes a $131,000 base, $12,500 bonus each year, and a whopping $91,000 a year in equity.
#2. Airbnb – $225,000 per year
Coming in at #2 is everyone’s favorite alternative to hotels—Airbnb. While Airbnb isn’t looking to make a play in the self-driving car space (at least, not yet), they still have a big need for machine learning scientists: smart algorithms that filter and cater properties to specific types of guests—families, couples, business travelers, etc.—is key to creating a best-in-class customer experience. With that in mind, average machine learning scientist salaries at Airbnb are $225,000 per year, including a $155,000 base and nearly $70,000 in annual equity.
Despite the $11,000 difference between Uber and Airbnb, this opportunity may be better for candidates looking for a bit more stability. The base salary is significantly higher, albeit with less equity and no bonus.
#3. Facebook – $211,000 per year
It’s hard to imagine too many tech jobs where Facebook wouldn’t make the list of best-paying companies. Since the beginning, Mark Zuckerberg has been willing to pay a premium for the best of the best and the emergence of machine learning is no exception. That’s why machine learning scientist salaries at Facebook average out to $211,000 per year—more than $100,000 more than the national average.
That includes nearly a $147,000 base salary, $13,000 bonus, and over $51,000 in equity each year. Oh, and according to Paysa data, machine learning scientists also get an average signing bonus of nearly $26,000. Not too shabby if you ask us.
#4. Twitter – $205,000 per year
We don’t often see Twitter make these lists of best-paying tech companies, but when it comes to finding the right AI talent, Twitter is willing to pull out all the stops. The average salary for a machine learning scientist at Twitter is $205,000 per year, including a $142,000 base salary, $12,000 annual bonus, and over $50,000 in equity. And, like their social media pals at Facebook, Twitter offers a signing bonus, too: nearly $17,000 for the right candidates to come on board.
#5. Palantir Technologies – $202,000 per year
Rounding out this list is Palantir Technologies—a company that is not necessarily a household name outside of Silicon Valley, but a legend to those in the tech world. Peter Thiel’s data technology company has an obvious use-case for good machine learning: they create products focused on turning data into actionable insights. Algorithms drive those insights, therefore machine learning scientists play a pivotal role in the company’s success.
The average salary for a machine learning scientist at Palantir Technologies is $202,000 per year. That includes a $143,000 base salary with a $13,000 bonus and over $45,000 in equity each year. Palantir is the third company on this list to also offer a signing bonus: nearly $16,000.
